Key West Fishing Report 12/27/06

Today was an interesting day . Started off wondering how the guys at the Weather Channel can look at themselves to shave. I wish I could be wrong that often. Anyway with much nicer calmer day than forecast the fishing started slow with a Dolphin (Mahi) at the end of December (lost?), then only a couple of Mackrel bite offs till after lunch. I guess they finally got hungry because the afternoon picked up steadily with Mackrel , Kingfish and ended with Blackfins at the end of the day. Wahoo and a few sails were reported on the radio but we never saw them.

Nice Day Fishing in Key West

After two weeks of 25 knot winds in Key West we finally had a nice day yesterday . We also had a charter to go fishing on this nice day and went Sailfishing using live baits .Fishing for the baits was exceptionally easy . At this point I'm thinking we are on are way to a Chanber of Commerce day of fishing in Key West.We cruise out to 175 ' and the color change looks like the one in "the book" on where to fish for Sailfish. We put out our Threadfins and the game was on! After about 45 minutes we decided to fish somewhere else on this beautiful color change and as the last bait was coming in we hooked a Wahoo and fought it for about five minutes of extreme reel scream and then he got a tooth on the leader and we moved on. Another great spot with flying fish jumping out of the water all over and we put out the baits and started fishing again. Well after the success of the last move we decided to move again in just 20 minutes and sure enough on the last bait we hooked and caught a 15 lb Bull Dolphin. Well I figured we were headed for some kind of Key West run and gun but in reverse. Finally we did find the right spot and watched a Sailfish swim thru our baits cape up , but no Threadfins were damaged. A little patience and we got the hook up about 5 minutes later. Good fight the Sailfisfh probably weighed 50-60 lbs and was not a quitter. Many jumps and runs later we brought him to the side of the boat and released him.

All in all it was a beautiful day of Fishing in Key West. If only they were all this nice . NOAA is sayingt nasty things about tommorrow, oh well they don't make there money being accurate.

Key West Summertime Fishing In February

What do you know summer is early this year . Ed and Janine fished wth us this week and caught this 38# bull Dolphin along with a 20 # bull and a half dozen 5-6 # fish. On the way in we hooked a 350#+ Blue Marlin that stripped a TLD 25 faster than you can Imagine. I guess she didn't want to play but it was an awesome display of brute power.

A quick stop at the reef brought up the perfect balance for the "Surf and Surf" dinner - a very nice Grouper.
